ZANO hails from the mining township of eMbalenhle, where his days of daydreaming about the stage were met with fierce rebellion and discouragement from his environment.
With R150 in his pocket and a dream, ZANO made his way to Pretoria where he studied music at the then Ochrim School Of Music, where he graduated top of his class with a Diploma in Jazz & Popular Music majoring in vocals. His voice was discovered one Wednesday afternoon in 2005 by the late Lebo Mathosa, who had heard a song he had just done with DJ Christos and Nkosinathi Maphumulo – who would later be the world-wide House music superstar and icon DJ Black Coffee - at his home studio. Lebo Mathosa gave Zano his first big break to work with a well-known artist as a backing vocalist. Later on, he was entrusted with songwriting and music production duties for Lebo Mathosa’s last album before her tragic passing.
Since then, Zano has worked on countless singles and albums with DJs/ Producers, and artists from all over the world such as Ralf Gum, AtJazz, Jullian Gomes, Riky Rick, DJ Cleo, Pascal Morais, The Layabouts, DJ Silyvi, AfroWarriors – but his most notable work was with DJ Black Coffee on his multi-platinum selling album “Home Brewed” and the “Africa Rising Live DVD”. The two created the inspirational and emotionally charged anthem “Someday”.
At the same time Zano also built quite an impressive profile on the SA Musical Theatre stage with supporting lead roles on musicals such as “The Fully Monty”, “Rent”, Ünder African Skies”, “Rock Of Ages”, “Sister Act”, and the first international production of “The Color Purple: The Musical” performed by an all South African cast at The Joburg Theatre produced by Bernard Jay and Directed by Janice Honeyman.
